Irondequoit Hosts Full Field for Inaugural RDGA Play Day

The first ever Rochester District Golf Association “Play Day” event got off to a fantastic start on Monday, May 19, as a full field of 90 golfers enjoyed a perfect day for golf on the 98-year-old Irondequoit Country Club’s classic Donald Ross-designed layout.

The starting field was eager to tour the storied Irondequoit golf course – the one-time host to a PGA Nationwide Tour event between 2005 and 2008 – in a friendly stroke-play competition for Men’s, Women’s and Senior Flights in both Net and Gross Score Divisions. Prior to teeing off, golfers were treated to a lunch on the patio – thanks to the staff and members of Irondequoit Country Club for helping to make this a memorable event for all.

Winning the overall Net Division title in the Men’s Flight was Kevin Pickhardt from Oak Hill Country Club, who posted a handicap-adjusted score of 9-under-par 63. Pickhardt finished one shot ahead of Bud Klafehn from the Durand Eastman Golf Club, who posted an 8-under-par 64. Timothy Dimino, another Durand Eastman Golf Club member, and Raymond Brooks from Chili Country Club finished in a tie for third place at 5-under-par 67.

Rounding-out the top-10 finishers in the Men’s Net Division were: Tru Hong (from Mill Creek Golf Club) in fifth place at 4-under-par 68; James M. Stuart (Shadow Pines Golf Club) in sixth at 69; William Bolling (Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club) in seventh at 70; David Warth (RDGA eClub) and Mark Lundquist (Ridgemont Country Club) tied for eighth at 71; and Dick Baxter (Sodus Bay) and Gerald Shaughnessy (LeRoy Country Club) tied for 10th at 72.

In the Women’s Net Division, MaryBeth Barber from Locust Hill Country Club earned first place honors with a 1-under-par 73, finishing two shots ahead of runner-up and fellow Locust Hill member Lisa D. Mulvaney at 75. Stafford Country Club’s Francesca Fuller finished in third place with a 77.

In the Men’s Senior Net Division, Gary Merritt from Churchville Golf Club was the first-place winner with a 7-under-par 65, finishing one shot ahead of James White from Caledonia Country Club, who posted a 66. Michael Wierzbicki from Sodus Bay Heights finished in third place at 69.

Rounding out the top-five Men’s Senior Net finishers were three golfers tied for fourth place at 71: Robert Natale from Genesee Valley Golf Club; Alan Montante from Webster Golf Club; and RDGA eClub member Dick Usselman.

In the Gross Division competitions, Oak Hill’s Pickhardt won the Men’s Flight with a 75; Ann Kerwick of Brook-Lea Country Club won the Women’s Flight with an 89; and Caledonia’s White won the Men’s Senior Flight with a 73.

Following the RDGA Match Play Championship at Locust Hill Country Club this week – featuring an exclusive field of the top-32 Player of the Year point winners from 2013 – the next event on the 2014 RDGA schedule is the Mixed Scotch No. 1 Event at Livingston Country Club on Tuesday, June 6. Registration for that event closes on June 1.
