For the top two golfers on the leaderboard, those conditions meant two different things.
“Greens were a lot quicker today, that is for sure,” said Oak Hill’s Trevor Sluman, the third round leader with a bogey-free score of 5-under-par 67 on Friday. “So they were – for me – a little better to make putts on. I was leaving them short the past few days, so I really adjusted well to them.”
“Greens were a little faster today and I just never really got comfortable,” said Stafford’s own Jim Scorse, who grinded out an even-par 72 in the third round. “I just never hit good putts until the last four or five holes.”
Friday’s five-shot swing between Sluman and Scorse changed the top of the leaderboard through 54 holes of the 72-hole District Championship – Scorse went from a two shot lead after Round 2 to a three shot deficit to Sluman after Round 3 – but the rest of the field became separated from the two leaders as the third day of the Championship came to a close.
With scores of 70-71-67, Sluman leads the field at 8-under-par through three rounds, followed by Scorse, who has posted rounds of 71-68-72 and occupies second place at 5-under-par. The next closest golfer on the leaderboard is Locust Hill’s Zach Ottman, who posted a 74 on Friday and stands at even par for the Championship. Oak Hill’s Michael Lane and Ravenwood’s Bob Chalanick are currently tied for fourth place at 2-over for the Championship.
Lane, who had a roller coaster-type day in Wednesday’s opening round – with five birdies on his first nine, followed by five bogies in his second nine – had the shot of the day in Friday’s third round, holing-out from the fairway for an eagle on the par-4 17th hole. The shot was part of a fantastic finish for Lane, in which he went birdie-bogey-eagle-birdie over the final four holes.
Saturday’s fourth and final round of the 2014 RDGA District Championship gets under way with the first tee time at 7:30 a.m.. The final pairing of Sluman, Scorse and Ottman tees off at 9:50 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow the completion of the round at approximately 3 p.m.
