Stafford Country Club’s Jim Scorse continued his steady charge in Round 2 of the 2014 RDGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Penfield Country Club on Saturday, August 9, posting a 3-under-par 68 to win the title by nine shots.

The victory was the fifth title for Scorse in the 25-and-over amateur event, one of the Rochester District Golf Association’s top annual championships.

The leader by one after a 4-under-par 67 in Friday’s first round, Scorse had one birdie and one bogey on the front nine in Saturday’s second and final round, as he and Oak Hill Country Club’s Brandon Nunn traded for the lead – although Scorse maintained his one shot advantage at the turn.

On the back nine, Scorse parred the first five holes before posting an Eagle-3 on the par-5 15th hole. He followed that with another birdie on the 17th hole. At the same time, Nunn fell back, posting three bogies and one double-bogey, as Scorse closed with the victory.

“I played pretty solid – I wasn’t hitting the ball too well on the front nine but obviously I got it together a little on the back side,” said Scorse. “Then, Brandon started hitting it a little sideways on the back nine. We went in different directions.”

Scorse finished with scores of 67-68 for a 7-under-par 135 total, while Nunn had scores of 68-76 for a 2-over-par 144 total. Finishing in third place with a 74 for a 146 total was Sean Flint of Midvale Country Club; tied for fourth place at 148 were Oak Hill Country Club’s Jim Mason and Locust Hill Country Club’s Adam Condello.
