Since his arrival at The Golf Club at Blue Heron Hills in 2017, PGA Head Professional Jim Edmister has been on a mission – to restore the Tournament of Champions to it’s traditional place as one of the Rochester area’s top annual amateur scratch championships.
With the Tournament of Champions celebrating its 30th anniversary year in 2018, Edmister is putting out an invitation to all area club champions and past winners – men AND women – to enter this year’s Championship, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3, at Blue Heron Hills.
For the past 30 years, the Tournament of Champions has promoted excellence in local amateur golf, featuring starting fields of only the club champions from Rochester-area golf facilities. Some of the past winners of the Tournament of Champions have included John Kircher and Tim Spitz from Monroe Golf Club, Jim Scorse from Stafford Country Club and Oak Hill’s Carter Lucas.
Traditionally, the Tournament of Champions has marked the start of the major amateur tournament season in Rochester, which includes other events such as the Country Club of Rochester Invitational, the Monroe Invitational Championship, the Brook-Lea Amateur Invitation and the RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial.
Although it began as an event featuring only the men’s club champions, the field has been opened in recent years to include both men’s and women’s club champions, as well as senior club champions in both men’s and women’s divisions. This year’s Tournament of Champions will include regular and senior flights for both men and women. The Men’s Championship Division will be contested from the Gold Tees at Blue Heron Hills (6,739 yards), while the Women’s and Senior Divisions will play from the Red Tees (5,427 yards).
The format for this year’s Tournament of Champions will be as a two-day, 36-hole, stroke play scratch championship. Registration is $135 per player and includes three rounds of golf (including practice), carts, range, lunch, prizes and a tee gift. Rochester area club champions who would like to play in this year’s event should contact Jim Edmister at 315-986-5888 and register by Wednesday, May 16.
