The second hole at St. Clair Country Club in Pittsburgh – host for this week’s Williamson Cup Matches.
This week in suburban Pittsburgh, Pa., four Rochester-area junior golfers are representing the Rochester District Golf Association in the 2018 Williamson Cup Matches, being hosted this year by the historic St. Clair Country Club.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, August 14 and 15, the four golfers – Jeremy Summerson from Cobblestone Creek Country Club, Gavin Simon of Locust Hill Country Club, Aiden Spampinato of Ravenwood Golf Club and Tyler McDonnell of Old Hickory Golf Club – along with RDGA officials, traveled to St. Clair Country Club to compete in the 55th annual Williamson Cup competition.

One of the longest-running competitions of its kind, the Williamson Cup was originally conceived as a team competition featuring charter members from Metropolitan New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Buffalo. Today, the Williamson Cup includes four-player teams from 10 golf associations from across the Northeast U.S. and Canada.
RDGA teams have won the Williamson Cup twice; in 1978, and most recently in 2009, when Gavin Hall, Joe Colosi, Ben Kircher and Yarik Merkulov won the title at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford. This year, Summerson, the 2017 RDGA Junior Champion, joins the team for a second consecutive year; McDonnell and Simon were named to the team based upon points earned in junor competition this year; and Spampinato was added following his victory in this year’s RDGA Junior Championship earlier this month.
This year’s host venue – St. Clair Country Club – first opened in 1916, and has grown through acquisition to 265 acres in the heart of the South Hills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 2003, 2006, and again in 2012 St. Clair was recognized as one of the top 100 Private Country Clubs in America, thus earning the recognition as one of the Platinum Clubs of America.
The forrmat for the Williamson Cup includes 36 holes of stroke play, with the low three scores from each team counting towards the team total at the end of the second day of competition.
