Buffalo’s Gaffney, Rochester’s Urzetta, Lead the Way in U.S. Open Local Qualifying

2018 US Open Local Qualifier Medalist Bill Gaffney EDIT

On Monday, May 7, a field of 55 golfers competed for three qualifying positions and two alternate spots in the 2018 U.S. Open Local Qualifier hosted by Ravenwood Golf Club.

Buffalo’s Bill Gaffney won medalist honors with a 4-under-par 68, including a 3-under 33 on the back nine. Three golfers tied for second place with scores of 69 – including Oak Hill Country Club Director of Golf Instruction Jeff Urzetta and Canadians Matt Lemay and Brett Cairns.

Urzetta qualified as part of a three-way playoff, in which he chipped-in for birdie from the back of the green on No. 1. Cairns joined Urzetta with a par on the playoff hole to claim the last two qualifying spots, with Lemay earning the First Alternate position.

There was also a three-way tie for fifth place at 1-under-par 71, with Buffalo’s David Hanes, Canada’s Sean O’Hara and Florida’s Nick Rousey playing off for the second alternate position – which was won by O’Hara.

The top three golfers – Gaffney, Urzetta and Cairns – all qualified to advance to the Sectional Qualifying Round of the U.S. Open, which begins on May 21 and concludes on June 4. If they survive those qualifiers, they will advance to the 2018 U.S. Open.

The 118th U.S. Open will be hosted by Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island on June 14 to 17, 2018.
