Current members of the Rochester District Golf Association’s Course Ratings teams met at Brook-Lea Country Club on Tuesday, April 22 for a training session and refresher on course ratings procedures for the upcoming 2014 season.
Although a cold rain dampened plans to go out on the course and practice what was presented during the training session, course raters and instructors alike were able to get in a full day of instruction as they prepare to complete a full season of course ratings assignments this year.
Diane Parke-Potter and Don Bennett from Brook-Lea led the discussion Tuesday morning, including a review of updates to the Course Rating process, as well as a review of the 4-person Course Rating team format. Currently, the RDGA benefits from the efforts of three 4-person teams of volunteer course raters, led by Sharon White of Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club, Rick Harter of Ridgemont Country Club and Gary Hammond of Wild Wood Country Club.
Among the topics discussed was the need to update several local courses that have recently added shorter-length tee boxes as part of the PGA of America’s Tee it Forward campaign. Also, with such a high volume of area courses to rate, the need to be both efficient and accurate was stressed.
