Leading the way in Round 1 was Jack Gianniny of the Country Club of Rochester, who was unfazed by the conditions, posting a 3-under-par 69 in one of the early morning rounds. Two golfers – Tom Linehan of Brae Burn and Ridgemont’s own Kevin Thornton – posted rounds of 1-under-par 71 to tie for second in the first round. Two time defending champion Trevor Sluman, 2016 Section V High School champion Evan Gaesser and Bobby McCartney of Sodus Bay Heights all tied for fourth place with rounds of even par 72 on Day One of the four-day District Championship. |
Prior to the start of the Championship, on Tuesday, a special opening drive ceremony was held on the first tee. James Infantino, the 1967 District Champion at Ridgemont, hit the ceremonial first tee shot, followed by Sluman.
One of the special commemorations this week during the 86th RDGA Championship was the ceremonial pairing of contestant Chuck Ryan with his sons, John Ryan III and Joe Ryan during the first and second rounds.
Chuck Ryan, brother of the late John H. Ryan Jr., the namesake of the RDGA Championship and a two-time champion, paid tribute by wearing a the type of “bucket” hat that his brother typically wore. The group also brought along the clubs often used by John Ryan Sr., who passed away last November.
