The final day of the 2014 RDGA Women’s District Championship Danielle E. Downey Memorial at Stafford Country Club saw a record-setting performance, as the day – and the title – belonged to Brook-Lea’s Jenna Hoecker.

Beginning the day with a two-shot lead over Ridgemont’s Jennifer Lee, Hoecker opened with a birdie and never looked back. She went on to record six birdies – and one eagle (on No. 5) – on the day, with her only blemish coming at No. 6, with a bogey.

By the end of the day, Hoecker had lapped the field – finishing 18 shots ahead of runners-up Kristin Powers of Oak Hill and Sara Eichelberger of Brook-Lea.

Hoecker thanked her father – Brook-Lea head professional Jon Hoecker – for his assistance as her caddie in the final round.

“He helped me out a little bit with putts – but basically, he just stayed positive and told me to trust my line,” she said.

As for Jon Hoecker, there couldn’t be a prouder dad.

“As soon as she hit that first drive straight down No.1, I knew she was going to have a great day,” he said. “That’s the best she’s ever played.”

Hoecker’s victory was memorable for a couple of reasons – first, her 7-under-par 65 in the final round shattered the previous women’s record at Stafford by 5 shots. Second, Hoecker recognized the meaning of her victory in a championship dedicated to the memory of one-time Brook-Lea member Danielle Downey, who mentored Hoecker in her earliest years in the sport.

“She reached out to me at the club,” Hoecker recalled of Downey. “She was 10 years older than me, but she always asked me to play with her. This was tough – but it was great to win this in her memory and bring the trophy back to the club.”
