One of the Rochester area’s oldest, most prestigious clubs – Brook-Lea Country Club in Gates – hosted the most recent event on the Rochester District Golf Association’s 2014 Play Day schedule on Monday, September 8.

Open in 1926, Brook-Lea, located in Gates, was designed by world-renowned architect Donald Ross – one of six Rochester-area courses designed by Ross. A part of the RDGA’s regular rotation of host courses for the District Championship John H. Ryan Memorial, Brook-Lea has hosted the RDGA Championship 11 times since 1931.

The RDGA wishes to thank Brook-Lea Country Club, its staff and members for being perfect hosts for this event in the inaugural season of the RDGA Play Day schedule.

A casual competition was held for three divisions in Monday’s event – Men’s, Senior Men’s (ages 55 and over) and Women’s – and within each division, gross and net scores were recorded.

Winning first place honors in the Women’s Net competition was Kathy Bull of Canandaigua Country Club, posting a handicap-adjusted, even-par 73 for the day. Tied for second place at 2-over-par 75 were Mary Beth Barber of Locust Hill Country Club and Joan Archer of Lake Shore Country Club. Patty Ransco of Blue Heron Hills Golf Club finished in fourth place with a 76. Winning first place in the Women’s Gross score competition was Mary Beth Barber with a 92.

There was a three-way tie for first place in the Men’s Net score division, with Philip DiNato from Timber Ridge Golf Club, David Warth of the RDGA eClub and Tru Hong from Mill Creek Golf Club each posting a handicap-adjusted score of 1-under-par 71. And in the Men’s Gross score division, there was also a two-way tie between DiNato and Warth, each with an 80.

In the Senior Net division, Ken Brickell of Braemar Country Club posted the day’s low score – a 6-under-par 66 – to take top honors. John Masten of the Genesee Valley Golf Club was second in the Senior Net division with a 68, followed by John Norris from Victor Hills Golf Club in third with a 69, and two golfers – Michael Sorce and Michael Bonafide – tying for fourth place at 70. In the Senior Gross competition, Brickell also finished in first place with a raw score of 76; followed in second place by Eric O’Neill of Genesee Valley Golf Club with a 77.

Highlighting the day’s action was the first hole-in-one recorded during an RDGA Play Day event. Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club’s Joe Heslor aced the par-3 18th hole at Brook-Lea – which also happened to be the very first shot on his first hole of the day in the event’s shotgun start.
