The 2022 RDGA Girls’ Junior Player of the Year: Sophia Cellura
The Rochester District Golf Association began its Girls’ Junior Player of the Year Award in 2018 as a way to honor the year’s top female junior players – ages 12 through 18 – based on points earned from local, regional and national junior tournaments throughout the season.
Winning the 2022 RDGA Girls’ Junior Player of the Year Award – for the first time – was Sophia Cellura of Brook-Lea Country Club. Cellura, a veteran RDGA Junior tournament competitor and a top Section V High School standout, finished third in this year’s RDGA Girls Junior Championship in July – but she had several accomplishments that catapulted her to the top of the Player of the Year points race in 2022, including:
- Shooting her career best 2-under par 70 to win the Hurricane Jr. Golf Tour Elite Invitational
- Winning the Oak Hill Women’s Club Championship
- Being named to the Girls’ Golf All-Greater Rochester for the 4th consecutive year
- Medalist at the Interdistrict Championship, shooting 3-over-par 78
- Being named First Team All-State based on High School State Championship performance
