The 2022 RDGA Senior Player of the Year: Mark Battle
The Rochester District Golf Association began its Senior Player of the Year Award in 2018 as a way of honoring the most consistent championship-level men’s senior player of the season.
Designed to recognize and celebrate consistent excellence in the game of golf over the course of a single season, the RDGA Senior Player of the Year is recognized annually. This recognition is open to all male golfers, ages 55 and above, in the RDGA and is based on gross score results only. To be considered for the RDGA Senior Player of the Year award, golfers must play in at least one RDGA event during the current season.
This year’s RDGA Men’s Senior Player of the Year Award was decided by a very narrow margin – 75 points – with two of the RDGA’s most loyal tournament players battling it out over countless events between May and October.
In the end, it was the RDGA’s own immediate past President, Mark Battle, who emerged as the 2022 RDGA Men’s Senior Player of the Year – outdistancing 5-time RDGA District Champion Jim Scorse by that narrow 75 point margin.
Battle began the year with his biggest victory – outlasting Oak Hill’s Ken Ogden for the 2022 RDGA Men’s Senior Match Play title at Caledonia CC. He then went on to claim a victory in the RDGA Two Person Best Ball at Wayne Hills. Throughout the rest of the season, Mark had no less than 6 top-5 finishes, including a T3 in the Brook-Lea Amateur Invitational’s Senior Division and a T4 in the Wilson Fitch Senior Championship. In fact, at the Senior Championship, Mark finished just 6 shots shy of becoming the second player to win both the Senior Match Play and District Championship titles in the same year.
In addition to Player of the Year, the top-32 point winners for the 2022 season also earn invitations to the 2023 RDGA Men’s Senior Match Play Championship and the top-10 point winners (and ties) earn exemptions into the 2023 RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial.
