The 2022 Women’s RDGA Co-Players of the Year: Ellen Weeks / Deb Wood
The Rochester District Golf Association began its Women’s Player of the Year Award in 2015 as a way of honoring the most consistent championship-level women’s player of the season.
Designed to recognize women’s skill in the game of golf, the Player of the Year award is presented each year. This recognition is open to all women in the RDGA and is based on gross scores only. To be considered for the Women’s RDGA Player of the Year award, golfers must play in at least one RDGA event to be included.
This year’s RDGA Women’s Player of the Year Award featured the most competitive points race in the eight-year history of the honor.
Throughout the latter half of the 2022 RDGA Tournament season, Ellen Weeks of Clifton Springs CC and Deb Wood of Durand Eastman GC battled neck-and-neck for the top of the Women’s POTY Points list.
Wood – who also won the 2017 RDGA Women’s POTY – began the year blazing, right out of the gates, with a victory in the RDGA Richard Wood Kickoff Two Person Scramble at Locust Hill. She would go on to two runner-up finishes in the Two Person Scramble at Brook-Lea and the Two Person Multi-Format at Clifton Springs – as well as a 3rd place finish in the Two Person Scramble at Irondequoit CC. Along the way – she was also a Quarterfinalist in the Women’s Rochester District Golf Association Championship – and, finished in a tie for fourth place in the RDGA Women’s Open.
For Weeks, 2022 was her best year as a competitive golfer in the RDGA – which, believe it or not, began only two or three seasons ago – although she has been an avid golfer for much longer. This year, Ellen finished 2nd at the RDGA Women’s Open but her record really stood out in the popular RDGA Two Person events, where she claimed no less that three 1st place finishes – at the Midvale Two Person Scramble; at the Two Person Alternate Shot at Stafford CC and in the final event of the season at the Two Person Scramble at Brook-Lea. Adding more fuel to her drive to the top, Ellen also recorded two more second place finishes in Two Person events along the way.
By the end of the 2022 season, Weeks and Wood BOTH earned 550 player of the Year points – making this year the first time we’ve ever had co-RDGA Women’s Players of the Year.
The race for the RDGA Women’s Player of the Year begins each May, with the opening of the RDGA Tournament Schedule.
