Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny for the Final Match of the 2014 Rochester District Match Play Championship at Locust Hill Country Club – conditions that were just right for another record-setting performance by Stafford Country Club’s Jim Scorse.
Scorse – who had not been extended past the 15th hole in his four previous matches in the Championship – met Midvale Country Club’s Sean Flint to decide the 2014 Match Play title on Saturday morning. And by the end of the Final, Scorse had still not played the last three holes of the course, defeating Flint in a hard-fought 4-and-3 decision.
For Flint, reaching the Match Play Final was the culmination of a week of upsets. As the No. 26th-ranked player in the field, Flint defeated No. 22 (Ben Hauser of Webster Golf Club), No. 10 (Darren Ressler of Oak Hill Country Club), No. 7 (Shane Gleason of Brookwoods) and No. 2 (Chris Blyth of Monroe Golf Club) to get to the Final match. In the Final, Flint was cheered-on by well wishers from his home club, including Midvale’s head pro (and 1996 RDGA District Championship winner) Mike Kiel, and Midvale General Manager Rich Marr.

With the victory, Scorse extended his record in the District Match Play Championship, winning his sixth title dating back to 1998. Three players are tied for second-most victories in the Championship at two each: John Kircher, Jim Mason and Dominic Bozzelli.
The RDGA wishes to thank the staff and membership of Locust Hill Country Club for their hospitality in hosting the 2014 District Match Play Championship!
