Shirley Durham to Receive the 2019 RDGA Leading The Way Award at Women’s Open

Shirley Durham Leading the Way 2019 WEBSITE SMALLOn August 5, the RDGA will be presenting its newest honor, the RDGA Leading The Way Award – to long-time women’s golf administrator and volunteer Shirley Durham.

Durham, an accomplished amateur golfer in her own right, has been a staple in the local golfing community for more than four decades, managing virtually every aspect of women’s amateur golf in Rochester at one time or another.

The RDGA Leading The Way Award was created in 2018 to honor an individual in the Rochester community who has worked tirelessly to grow the game of golf for women and men. Winning last year’s inaugural award was long-time PGA instructor Dianne Wilde.

The award presentation will take place as part of the annual dinner following the conclusion of the RDGA Women’s Open and RDGA Women’s Championship at Stafford Country Club on Monday, August 5, at 6:00 p.m.

Those who are interested in attending the dinner and awards presentation for Durham but can not play in the tournament are invited to join us for dinner for $40 per person. (CLICK HERE for more information). Please RSVP by calling the RDGA Office at (585)-292-5950.

Among her many accomplishments in golf, Shirley Durham authored a book entitled Mr. Ryder’s Trophy. A long-time member of Penfield Country Club and the Country Club of Rochester, Durham has held posts in many of the leading women’s golf organizations throughout Rochester, New York State and the USGA, including:
  • WRDGA Course Rating Chair and Historian
  • WGAWNY President
  • USGA Girls Junior Championship Committee
  • USGA Women’s Handicap Procedure Committee
  • USGA Rules Official
  • Wegmans LPGA Rules Official
In addition to her off-course duties, Durham also has an accomplished amateur playing record that includes:
  • Three U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur Championships
  • Women’s World Team Championship State Championship Team
  • New York State Women’s Senior Championship Age Division winner
  • Seven time Penfield Country Club Women’s Club Champion
