Sluman Takes Control of 2015 RDGA District Championship in Third Round

Trevor Sluman tees off on the par-3 18th hole at Midvale Country Club in the third round of the 2015 RDGA District Championship as Shane Dobesh and Jim Scorse look on, right.

The 2015 RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Memorial continued on Friday, July 10, at Midvale Country Club with the 43-player field competing in Round 3.

Defending champion Trevor Sluman of Oak Hill Country Club came roaring back from a second-round 75 to post a 7-under-par 65 on Friday, falling just one shot short of the course record, but taking a four-shot lead going into Saturday’s fourth and final round.

The long-hitting Sluman – nephew of PGA Tour player and past RDGA Champion Jeff Sluman – carded seven birdies and no bogies in the third round on Friday, including birdies on three of four par-5s on the par-72, 6,632-yard Robert Trent Jones layout.

“Obviously, it went well today. I hit a lot of quality shots, but I also left a few out there,” said Sluman, who hesitated to describe the round as perfect.

“As a golfer, you can’t say that,” he noted.

Although Sluman made the biggest move in the round traditionally referred to as “moving day,” Webster Golf Club’s Shane Dobesh also made a big move, which included eagle-3s on two par-5s, at Nos. 8 and 10. Dobesh finished the day with a 5-under-par 67, jumping up to second place overall, four shots behind Sluman entering Saturday’s fourth round.

Dobesh, who won the RDGA Match Play Championship in May, didn’t want to speculate on what kind of round he needs to overtake Sluman in the final round.

“I can’t do that, he said. “It never works if I play with a specific number in my head to start the day, mentally.”

Second-round leader Jim Scorse of Stafford Country Club stalled a bit on Friday, posting a 2-over-par 74 and falling into a tie for third place with Jack Gianniny of the Country Club of Rochester at 1-over-par 217 for the Championship. Scorse and Gianniny begin Saturday’s final round eight shots behind Sluman.

As for Sluman, sleeping on a four shot lead with one round to play won’t give him nightmares.

“I was in the same position last year – and I’ve been here before,” he said of the three-round lead. “So, hopefully, the experience will help me along the way. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
