Scenic Wayne Hills Country Club in Lyons was the setting for the third event on the 2014 Rochester District Golf Association tournament schedule – the Two Person Four Ball (Best Ball) – on Sunday afternoon, May 18.
A field of 90 golfers – playing in 45 two-person teams – competed in one of the more popular RDGA tournament formats of the year, in which players played every shot with their own ball, with only the best score between teammates counting towards the team score on each hole. Teams were then organized in flights based on the lowest current individual USGA/RDGA handicap from each team.
Players were treated to a course in great condition and enjoyed the fine hospitality of the Wayne Hills staff and membership.
Two teams finished the day tied for the best score of the tournament, a 4-under-par 68. Troy Allen of Brockport Country Club and Shane Gleason of the Brookwoods Country Club finished in a tie for first place with the team of Wade Sarkis and James Johnson Jr., both from Canandaigua Country Club. The team of Shawn Baker and James Mason, both from Oak Hill Country Club, finished in third place overall with a score of 69.
Finishing in a tie for fourth place, at 2-under-par 70, were four teams: Jim Riley (from Brook-Lea Country Club) and Bob Agresti; Cory Lamberton (Churchville Golf Club) and Ken Starkweather (Mill Creek Golf Club); Nicholas Velasco (Caledonia Country Club) and Zach Fuller (Oak Hill Country Club); and Steve Fisher and Robert Zeman (both from Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club).
There was also a tie for first place in the Women’s Flight, with two teams tied at 91 in the Gross Score Division: Elizabeth Thorley of Mendon Golf Club and Lisa Mulvaney from Locust Hill Country Club, and Susanne Yarnall and Joan Leroy, both from CenterPointe Country Club. The team of MaryBeth Barber and Bridget Leipold from Locust Hill Country Club finished in third place with a score of 94.
In the Net Division of the Women’s Flight, the team of Thorley and Mulvaney cruised to victory with an 8-under-par 65 – six shots ahead of Wendy Bolton (Executive Women’s Golf Association of Rochester) and Colleen Roche of Baldwinsville, New York.
In the individual flights, Flight I finished in a two-way tie between the teams of Allen/Gleason and Sarkis/Johnson Jr., each with scores of 68. Flight II also finished in a two-way tie between Lamberton/Starkweather and Velasco/Fuller at 70. Winning Flight III was the team of Riley/Agresti (with a score of 70), and winning Flight IV with a score of 78 was the team of Glenn Smith (Salmon Creek Country Club) and David Evans (RDGA eClub).
