Upsets Prevail in Day 2 of 2015 RDGA Match Play Championships at Ontario - RDGA

The RDGA Match Play Championship Trophies and RDGA Senior Championship Trophies.

The second day of the 2015 RDGA Match Play Championships featured a few upsets – none bigger than 6-time District Match Play Champion Jim Scorse of Stafford – as the field was narrowed from 8 to 4 in the morning quarterfinals and from 4 to 2 in the afternoon semifinals.

Hosted by Ontario Country Club on Saturday, the District Match Play Championships also included the inaugural RDGA Senior Match Play Championship for players ages 55 and older. In both competitions, seedings were arranged based on points earned by eligible players throughout the 2014 season.

Coming into the competition, the No. 1 seed in the Match Play Championship was held by defending champion Jim Scorse of Stafford Country Club.

After winning his first two matches on Friday, Scorse met Oak Hill Country Club’s Shawn Baker in Saturday morning’s quarterfinals. Baker, the No. 25 seed entering the Championship, had already upset No. 8 seed Jacob Reimer in the first round, followed by No. 9 Kevin Peters in round two, before squaring off vs. Scorse.

In the quarterfinals, Baker narrowly defeated Scorse, 1-up, to advance to the semifinal round.

In other quarterfinal action, Andrew Dailey, Zach Ottman and Shane Dobesh all won to advance to semifinals.

In Saturday afternoon’s semifinal matches, Dobesh defeated Ottman, 1-up, and Baker continued his hot streak, defeating Dailey, 3-and-2.

In the Senior Match Play Championship quarterfinals on Saturday, the upsets also continued, as No. 9 Andrew Conway of Ravenwood Golf Club defeated No. 1 seed Bob Zeman of Sodus Bay Heights, by a 2-up decision.

In other quarterfinal matches in the Senior Match Play Championship, Mark Battle defeated Dan Overbeck; Bob Hospers defeated Stephen Schickler; and Steve Hakes defeated George Privitera.

In the Senior Match Play semifinals Saturday afternoon, Battle defeated Conway and Schickler defeated Hakes.
